Motivation Monday: Shut Up and Do It Anyway

Let's talk about motivation.

Specifically, let's talk about why you should stop waiting for it.

Some days you wake up fired up and ready to take on the world. The energy is there, the clarity is there, everything feels possible. Those days are great.

Other days you have nothing. Zero. The tank is empty and the idea of doing anything productive feels genuinely impossible.

Here is the uncomfortable truth. Both of those days require the same output from you.

That is why motivation is not the answer.

You Do Not Rise to Your Motivation. You Fall to Your Systems.

James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, has a line that stuck with me. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.

Motivation is a feeling. Feelings come and go. Systems stay.

The people who consistently get things done are not the ones who feel motivated every day. They are the ones who have built habits strong enough to carry them through the days when motivation is nowhere to be found.

For me that looks like this. Gym in the morning. Shower. Clean workspace. Set a start time. Make a to do list and cross things off as I finish them.

None of that is glamorous. None of it requires motivation to execute. But once I get in the zone through those habits, I work whether I want to or not. The system takes over and the question of whether I feel like it becomes irrelevant.

Build the system. Stop waiting for the feeling.

There Is Never a Right Time

If you are waiting for conditions to be perfect before you start, I have bad news.

They will never be perfect. There will always be something out of place. Something not quite ready. Something that feels like a valid reason to wait a little longer.

When I started Bait Dogs Apparel my life was an absolute mess. Nothing was ideal. Nothing was perfectly lined up. I started anyway. I still do not know exactly why that was the moment I chose. It just felt like it had to be.

Think about airplane pilots. There is always a chance of turbulence. Always a risk of bad weather. Always something that could go wrong. They fly anyway. Because waiting for perfect conditions means never leaving the ground.

You cannot wait for perfect. You have to take the shot when you can and figure the rest out on the way up.

The Fear Nobody Talks About

Most people assume the thing holding them back is fear of failure.

Often it is actually fear of success.

Not the obvious version of that, not "I do not want to be famous." Something quieter and more honest than that. Something that sounds like "what if it actually works and I cannot handle what comes next?"

People prefer the devil they know. Even if where you are is unpleasant or unsatisfying, it is known. You know how to manage it. You have figured out how to survive it.

The truly scary thing about leveling up is that it will require more from you. More effort, more skill, more capacity than you currently have. And you cannot know in advance exactly what that will look like.

So people stay where they are. Not because they do not want more. Because staying is familiar and moving forward is not.

The only way through that fear is to move anyway.

Shut Up and Do It Anyway: Two Stupid Tricks That Actually Work

Here is the thing about that scared voice in your head. If you stop and think about all the reasons not to do something, you will find them. You are tired. You do not want to. You have an early morning tomorrow. You can talk yourself out of anything if you give yourself enough time to think about it.

So do not think about it. Just go.

I have two tactics for this that are genuinely embarrassing but genuinely work.

The first one. Sometimes I will goad myself into doing something I do not want to do by telling myself "do it." And then something in me goes "well I’ll show me" and I do it. It is ridiculous. It works every time.

The second one is the countdown. If I have to make a call I am dreading or start a task I have been avoiding, I count myself down from three. Three. Two. One. Go. Same thing I do before I jump into a cold pool. I do not want to jump. But once I hit one I am already in the air.

Dumb as hell. Highly effective.

Action Starves the Doubt

Here is something worth understanding about that voice in your head.

It needs silence to survive.

When you are really working, when you are genuinely focused and in the zone and getting things done, that voice does not have any oxygen to feed itself. It gets quiet. Not because you defeated it. Because you stopped giving it space to operate.

The best thing you can do for your self doubt is get so busy doing the thing that there is no room left for the doubting.

No one gets good at something by doing it once and calling it a day. Growing a business, building a skill, chasing a dream, all of it requires getting comfortable doing uncomfortable things over and over until they stop being so uncomfortable. The first time is always awkward and imperfect. That is not a sign you are doing it wrong. That is just how starting works.

Shut Up and Bite Back

Bite Back is not an easy thing to do.

To stand up and say I am not going to take this anymore and actually make a change takes real determination. Being frustrated with where you are is easy. I think more people are frustrated with their lives than are willing to admit.

But the doing. The actual biting back. That takes something more.

It takes telling the scared voice to shut up for five seconds and leaping before you have talked yourself out of it.

I cannot promise you that if you try the thing you have been putting off it will work out perfectly. I do not know your situation. I do not know what you are capable of yet.

What I can tell you is that you probably do not have all the skills, all the knowledge, or all the experience you think you need right now. Neither did anyone else who ever started something worth starting.

Start anyway. Figure it out along the way. There is still a ton of stuff I do not know and I am working on figuring it out every single day. That is not a weakness. That is just what building something actually looks like.

Your fears are just thoughts. They are not a crystal ball. They do not know how this ends.

You can either let them control your life. Or you can tell them to shut up for five seconds and leap.

We are the underdogs. We don't stay down, we bite back.
