Motivation Monday: Stop Apologizing for Wanting More
I want to tell you something about where I see Bait Dogs in ten years.
Full time. A real team. A warehouse. A community of people who genuinely lift each other up and believe in what we are building together.
When I say that out loud to certain people, I can see it. The slight pause. The polite nod. The internal eye roll they think they are hiding. I can not always tell if they think I am talking out of my butt or just being cocky. But here is the thing: I do not actually think I am crazy for wanting it. I see it. I see exactly what it could look like and how we could get there.
And I refuse to apologize for that.
The Difference Between Ambition and Arrogance
People confuse these two things all the time, so let me be blunt about where I think the line actually sits.
It comes down to how full of shit you are.
Someone telling you they could beat prime Mike Tyson in a boxing match? That is arrogance. A surgeon with twenty years of experience saying they can perform a complex operation safely and efficiently? That is ambition backed by something real. One is just noise. The other is earned confidence.
The other tell is whether you have actually done any work. People who are genuinely ambitious tend to have goals, a plan, and receipts. People who are just arrogant tend to have a lot of Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite energy. You know the type. "I bet I could throw a football over one of them mountains." Big talk. No follow through. Nothing to show for it.
Ambition without work is just a daydream. Ambition plus work is how things actually get built.
What the Naysayers Are Usually About
When someone rolls their eyes at your dream, it is rarely actually about you.
A lot of the doubt people throw your way is their own stuff coming out sideways. Maybe they never attempted their dream. Maybe they tried and it did not work out and now the sight of someone else going for it is uncomfortable. That is a them problem, not a you problem.
I try not to listen to the people who just want to tear something down without offering anything useful. There is a big difference between someone who says "here is what you could do better" and someone who just says "you suck." The first one I can work with. The second one has nothing for me.
Useful criticism sounds like feedback with a direction attached. Noise is just noise. Learn to tell the difference and stop giving the noise so much real estate in your head.
What You Are Actually Risking
Here is the part nobody likes to talk about.
Every time I have put my own money into this business, it has felt like a risk. We have not had a profitable month yet. We make money, but between all of our costs we are still in the red. Every investment has been a bet on myself with no guarantee it pays off. If it all dried up tomorrow, I would not see that money again.
And I did it anyway. Because sometimes you have to pull the trigger and see it through.
That is not recklessness. That is what it actually looks like to back yourself. Not the Instagram version where everything works out and you post the highlight reel. The real version where you put in real money, real time, and real effort without knowing how it ends.
And if it does not pan out? I will be bummed. It will not be the end of the world. I will try again with everything I have learned, a better team, and a head start that the first attempt gave me. Failure is not a full stop. It is just information.
Where Ambition Goes Wrong
I do think ambition can go sideways, and I want to be honest about that too.
Wanting more than you need is pretty natural. A nice house, a reliable car, the ability to take care of the people you love, some money to enjoy life a little. That all sounds right to me. But wanting more than you could ever actually use just to say you have it? That is where things start to feel hollow.
And wanting more at someone else's expense? That is where it gets genuinely dangerous. The moment ambition turns into I need to take from others so they can not have it, or I need to grind people down to get ahead, you have left ambition behind entirely. That is something uglier.
Do right by people. Help where you can. If the spoils come from that, excellent. Start screwing people over and you are playing a game you are going to lose eventually.
Say It Out Loud
If you have a big ambition that you have been keeping quiet, something you want but have been afraid to put out there because of what people might think, I want to say something directly to you.
Tell somebody. Put it out into the world.
It does no good sitting locked up inside your head. Do not be afraid to ask the universe for what you want. You might just get it.
Dream bigger than you think is possible. Dream so big it sounds a little unreasonable when you say it. It is okay to dream quietly, but dreaming loudly is how things actually start to move.
The eye rolls are not the point. The naysayers are not the point. The people who have given up on their own dreams and want company in that are not the point.
The point is that you see it. And if you see it, that matters.
We are the underdogs. We don't stay down, we bite back.
