Motivation Monday: What It Actually Means to Never Give Up
Never give up.
A spoken version of this article from Bait Dogs.
You have heard it a thousand times. It is on t-shirts and motivational posters and the bios of people who have never been through anything particularly hard. It gets thrown around so casually that it has almost lost all meaning.
So let's talk about what it actually means.
Never Giving Up Is Not the Same as Never Losing
This is the part nobody tells you.
Most people hear never give up and think it means not for one second can they doubt themselves. That every day has to be forward momentum. That any loss or setback or moment of genuine despair means they have failed the whole concept.
That is not what it means.
Never giving up means that even when you lose, even when hard things happen, even when you are genuinely in the trenches, you gut it out. You stay. You keep your promise to yourself that you are going to try, even when trying feels pointless and even when you are not sure it is going to work.
It does not mean you have to run full steam at your goal twenty four hours a day seven days a week. It means you are going to try. That is it. You may not succeed right away. But you are going to try.
Effort is rewarded in life. If you try hard enough for long enough, something will happen. It may not be what you expected. It may not come on the timeline you wanted. But something will happen.
What Never Giving Up Looks Like at 2am
Not the poster version. The real one.
It looks like promising yourself that even when things get complicated, even when you feel like you are banging your head against a wall, you are not going to quit. It looks like a quiet, private commitment made to no one but yourself in the moments when nobody is watching and nobody would blame you for stopping.
It looks like my Kelly School of Business rejection. Getting that letter and feeling like a ten pound bag of garbage and then finding another path to the same destination anyway. Just because the path to the goal changes does not mean the goal is no longer what you want.
It looks like keeping a brand alive on late nights after a full day of work while money is tight and the results are not coming fast enough and every reasonable voice is telling you to be more realistic.
It looks like doing it anyway.
Stubborn Is Not Always a Bad Word
Here is my honest confession. When something is not working I will bang my head against the problem for hours trying to force my original approach to work. I am a stubborn old mule and I am damn proud of it.
Most of the time it takes outside intervention. Someone outside the problem making a suggestion I somehow actually listen to. A perspective I could not get from inside the mess I was in.
That is not weakness. That is knowing yourself well enough to know when you need help seeing something you cannot see on your own.
Never giving up does not mean never asking for help. It means staying committed to the destination while being flexible enough to change your route when the current one is not working.
If it is not working, try something different. The goal stays. The approach changes. That is not giving up. That is getting smarter.
When Stopping Is Actually the Right Call
I want to be honest about something that most never give up content conveniently skips.
There is a version of stopping that is the right decision.
When it feels like a job you desperately want to quit. When the feeling you first had doing it is completely gone and has been gone for a long time. When it makes you bitter, resentful, and genuinely wanting out.
Those are real signals worth paying attention to. Never giving up on the right thing and refusing to let go of the wrong thing are not the same. Knowing the difference is something you will have to figure out for yourself. Nobody can tell you which one you are in.
What Actually Kept Me Going
When I think about the moments I came closest to walking away from Bait Dogs, I honestly could not point to one specific thing that kept me going.
It was the mission being bigger than the hard moment. The idea that someone out there needed to hear what we were building. The brand being the rope I used to pull myself out of the worst period of my life, which meant letting go of it would have meant going back to having nothing to hold onto.
It was my business partner believing in it enough to repeat to people that we were going to make a million dollars like it was already decided. It was my dad being proud of something I built. It was the strangers who messaged saying it reached them at exactly the right time.
And maybe most of all it was the fact that I started this during the hardest year of my life. Which meant quitting it would have felt like letting that year win.
I was not going to let that year win.
For the Person Who Has Been Trying Forever
If you are reading this feeling like you have been at it for so long without results that never giving up feels naive, here is what I want to say to you.
The pitch black room you are sitting in right now does not mean the light is not coming.
You started this for a reason. With energy and belief and a version of yourself that knew exactly why it mattered. That version of you is still in there somewhere. And they are begging you not to stop.
In the casino of life it is always worth one more roll of the dice. You have nothing to lose by trying and everything to lose by stopping before you find out what was on the other side of the effort.
Some things take ten years. Being two years in and not seeing the results you expected does not mean it is not working. It might just mean you are not there yet.
The measure of a person is being able to take the pain and suffering and use it to create something good.
You have more of that in you than you know.
Never Giving Up Can Go Too Far
I want to say this because it matters.
There is a version of never giving up that looks more like self destruction than determination. When you are so focused on not quitting that you ignore your mental health, your relationships, your physical wellbeing. When the stubbornness becomes an excuse not to rest or ask for help. When you confuse burning yourself out with proving something.
Never giving up should mean staying committed to the goal. Not sacrificing everything else on the altar of it.
Rest is not giving up. Asking for help is not giving up. Changing your approach is not giving up.
The only thing that is actually giving up is deciding the goal no longer matters and walking away for good.
What Bite Back Actually Means
Bite Back is never giving up with teeth.
It is not a passive decision to keep going. It is an active one. It is looking at what is in front of you, understanding exactly how hard it is, and choosing to fight back anyway.
The bait dog that started all of this never gave up. It came back from things that should have broken it permanently. It found happiness after everything it had been through. Not because it was fearless. Not because it never hurt. But because something in it kept going anyway
That is what never giving up actually looks like.
Not the slogan.
The dog that got back up.
Try One More Time
That is the whole ask.
Not perfect. Not certain. Not fearless.
Just one more try. Whatever it is you have been thinking about giving up on, try it one more time. Make the quiet promise to yourself that you are still in it. That the goal still matters. That you are going to keep going even if you cannot see how it ends from here.
Never give up does not mean never doubting. It means doubting and going anyway.
Try one more time.
We are the underdogs. We don't stay down, we bite back.
