Why We Started Bait Dogs Apparel
I've wanted to start a business for a long time. In high school and college, I read a lot of books about entrepreneurs. I didn't grow up around anyone who ran their own business. I just always admired people who did, and I knew it was something I wanted for myself someday.
The problem was, I kept waiting for the "big idea." I thought I needed to come up with the next Google or Apple before I could start anything. Looking back, that was a mistake. Eventually, I realized I didn't need a billion-dollar idea. I just needed to start with something I actually knew.
The Spark
A couple of my friends had started their own business a few months before I did. It was a media company, and they actually shoot all of our photos for us now. Watching them go from "talking about it" to "actually doing it" stuck with me. One day I just thought, if they can do this, I can too.
What Was Missing
For a while before that, I had been wearing a lot of Darc Sport. I liked their stuff a lot. The fit, the look, the message, it was all close to what I was into. Their slogan is "Never Give Up," which is a great slogan. It's clear, and it gets the point across.
But something felt like it was missing for me. It wasn't that anything was wrong with what they were doing. It was more that I felt like there was more to say. I wanted a brand that didn't just have a good slogan, but one that had a real story behind it. Something that felt like it was about me, and about people like me, not just a cool phrase on a hoodie.
That gap is where Bait Dogs started to take shape.
Building It With the Right People
Once I decided to go for it, I brought on a business partner who's been a friend since middle school. He's great with the logistics side of things, and from the start, he helped us find suppliers and figure out how to actually get this off the ground.
I also knew someone who could design our logo. That logo took a few drafts to get right. The first couple of versions had our dog face inside of an outline shaped like a head. Then our designer sent over a version without that outline, just the face on its own. That one clicked. That's the logo we use today.
Starting Simple
When we were first putting everything together, I had a ton of ideas. Hoodies, sweatpants, t-shirts, gym bags, hats, you name it. I wanted to launch with all of it.
The smarter move, though, was to strip it all down. We picked one product, got it right, and launched with just that. If we had tried to do everything at once, we probably would have spent a year just trying to get it all set up, and it might not have worked at all. Starting simple meant we could actually launch, learn, and build from there.
The first product we launched was an oversized t-shirt. I've always loved that fit, and I noticed a lot of people in gym culture feel the same way. We got samples back, loved the quality, and knew that was the one.
Launch Day
We launched on July 7th, 2025. I had been excited about this for a long time, and it was finally real. We told everyone we knew right away, family, friends, people who had watched us build this from nothing. A lot of them became our first customers, and the support meant everything.
From day one, there was one thing I told my business partner: we are not compromising on quality, ever. We went through samples from four or five different suppliers before we found one where everything was right, the stitching, the collar, the print, how it held up after washing. When we finally found that supplier, we knew that was who we were going with.
Who This Is For
When I started Bait Dogs, I thought of it as a gym brand. Over time, that changed. I realized "Bite Back" isn't just about lifting weights. It's about how you respond when life gets hard, no matter what that looks like for you.
Bait Dogs is for the outcast. It's for anyone who has ever felt like they don't belong, like they're not good enough, or like they don't deserve to succeed. If that's you, even some of the time, this brand is for you. The message is simple: you can accomplish what you want in life. It takes hard work and dedication, but you can get there.
How We Work
My business partner handles the logistics side, and I focus on the brand itself, the products, the designs, working with our designers. Everyone is detail-oriented about something, just not the same things. He catches things I'd miss, and I catch things he'd miss. That's what makes this work.
A year in, we've made good progress. We're not at the point where this is my full-time job yet, but we're getting there. As we grow, the goal is simple: make more, so we can do more. More products, more photo shoots, and more donations to the Humane Society.
What People Are Saying
The feedback on quality has been great. People who wear our stuff come back and tell us how much they like it, and that means a lot, since quality was something we never wanted to compromise on.
But the thing that means even more is hearing that the message is landing. We've gotten messages from people we've never met, telling us that something we said inspired them to keep going. That's exactly what I hoped would happen when we started this.
Our best-selling design right now is "The Bite Back." It's a fierce, aggressive design, and I think it captures exactly what biting back means: facing your problems head-on, giving it everything you have, and refusing to quit.
If You're Thinking About Starting Something
If there's one thing I'd want someone to take from this, it's this: just start. Keep it simple. Set goals you can actually measure, and go.
I don't know what it'll take to light that fire for you. But there's a quote from Steve Jobs that stuck with me: "Everything around you was built by people not smarter than you." That's it. That's the whole thing. Nobody's waiting for permission. You don't need the next Google or Apple. You just need to start with something you know.
We did. And we're still going.
