Motivation Monday: You Are Not Your Worst Day
Motivation Monday: You Are Not Your Worst Day
Let's get something straight right off the bat.
You are not the sum of your doubts, your fears, or your insecurities. You are the sum of your hopes, your dreams, and your ambitions.
Read that again if you need to.
Bad Days Happen. To Everyone.
Nobody gets through this life without getting knocked down. Not the most successful person you know. Not the strongest person at your gym. Not anyone.
Bad things happen. Sometimes really bad things. Things you did not deserve, did not see coming, and had no control over. That is just the reality of being alive.
But here is the thing. A bad day is not a life sentence. A hard season is not your permanent address. And your worst moment is not your identity.
How you respond to your worst day says more about you than your worst day ever could.
Feel It First
Here is something I want to be clear about. This is not a post telling you to push through the pain and pretend everything is fine.
Feel it. When something hard happens, you cannot just bury it down inside and expect that to work. Sit in it for a minute. Let yourself have a bad day.
Personally, when I know I am having a rough one, I put on "I'm Just a Kid" by Simple Plan and let myself wallow for a little while. Then I queue up Tubthumping by Chumbawamba. You know the one. "I get knocked down but I get up again." It sounds ridiculous but it works. Give yourself permission to feel it, then give yourself permission to start finding your way back.
The goal is not to skip the hard part. The goal is to make sure the hard part does not become the whole story.
You Are Not the Wreckage
It is easy to understand why people let hard moments define them. Sometimes getting beat down by life takes more than you have ever had to give. Sometimes digging yourself out of a hole requires more strength than you knew you had. Sometimes you just do not have it in you to fight back right away.
That is okay. That is human.
But you are not just the wreckage that the world left in its wake. You are not a victim of what has happened to you. And you are not defined by the hardest thing you have ever been through.
Bad things happening to you does not mean you are not worthy of good things. It just means you are a person living a real life. And real lives have hard chapters.
Do Something. Anything.
When you are ready, and only when you are ready, do something. Anything that moves you in a positive direction.
For me that is the gym. Lifting something heavy when everything feels heavy is the fastest way I know to remind myself that better days are possible. The endorphins kick in, the noise in my head quiets down, and somewhere between the first and last rep I remember that I am capable of more than whatever tried to knock me down.
Your thing might not be the gym. Maybe it is a walk. A conversation with someone you trust. A creative outlet. Whatever it is, use it. That is what it is there for.
There is a way this all gets better. It might not be obvious right now. It might not be easy. But there is a way.
This Is What Biting Back Looks Like
Bite Back is not always a dramatic comeback moment. Sometimes it is just saying, quietly, to yourself:
I am not going to lay here and take this. I am going to do something. Anything. That moves me forward.
That is it. That is the whole thing.
You are not your worst day. You never were. And the fact that you are still here, still reading this, still trying, is proof of that.
Now go have a good Monday.
We are the underdogs. We don't stay down, we bite back.
